Tighthead Sisilia Tuipulotu scored in either half, while co-captain Alex Callender returned from injury with a player-of-the-match display. 🤝 Sheen: first minister meeting was "constructive"

Hollywood actor Michael Sheen has met First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth to discuss the toxic dumping claims raised in his BBC documentary — his first sit-down with the FM after he said an offer to meet "was not taken up" before the film aired.

• Sheen, speaking on Instagram: "I've just come from a meeting with the first minister. Talking about how we can move forward and address all the issues that Buried raised around the toxic dumping, and that was really constructive. So early days but that's really encouraging."
• Buried with Michael Sheen tested 14 sites in Wales and north-west England linked to Monsanto, finding elevated levels of cancer-causing PCBs at all but one. Sheen appeared before the Welsh Affairs Committee last week, urging MPs to back a national testing programme for historic toxic dumps.

📣 Backlash over podcaster "minimising" Dan Thomas arrest

A Reform UK-supporting evangelical YouTuber has been criticised after posting a video in which she said arrests like Dan Thomas' happen in politics "all the time".

• Faith Jarvis claimed the grounds for the arrest were unknown and that resignations of the kind were routine: "Now, of course the media is going to make this look way bigger than it probably is. But this happens all the time." Critics said she had "glossed over the alleged criminality".
• Gwent Police confirmed a 45-year-old man from the Aberbargoed area was arrested at the weekend and bailed pending further enquiries. Thomas says he was released without charge and has "done nothing wrong". He remains the Reform MS for Casnewydd Islwyn.

🚗 Reform accused of twisting 20mph road death figures

Road safety campaigners say Reform UK Senedd Members and parts of the press have wrongly linked a rise in Welsh road deaths to the default 20mph limit — because the increase happened on 60mph and 70mph roads, not 20mph ones.

• Official figures show 91 people were killed on Welsh roads in 2025, seven more than in 2024 — but there were eight more deaths on 60mph roads and two more on 70mph roads, a combined increase of 10. Fatalities at 20mph and 30mph have fallen since the limit was introduced in September 2023.
• Reform MS Joe Martin told the Senedd the policy had "achieved the opposite of what was intended", citing all-road casualty figures rising from 1,091 in 2024 to 1,207 in 2025; Jason O'Connell made "misleading" claims in a GB News op-ed: "Labour's 20mph experiment has made Welsh roads more dangerous, not safer".
• Rod King, founder of the 20's Plenty campaign, called Reform "disingenuous" for obscuring where the deaths occurred: "That's an additional 10 people and families devastated. At all other speed limits the fatalities in 2025 were unchanged or lower."

🏢 Eleven business experts to shape new development agency

A panel of 11 business figures has been appointed to design a new economic development and innovation agency for Wales, chaired by Associated British Ports chair Jonathan Lewis.

• The panel — which includes Sarah Williams-Gardener OBE, a founding member of Starling Bank, as vice chair — will advise Cabinet Minister Adam Price on the agency's form and function. Members serve unpaid.
• The agency is central to the government's productivity mission: to halve Wales' productivity gap with the rest of the UK within ten years. Price: "Improving productivity will have a direct consequence of creating better jobs for people, thereby putting more money in their pockets and raising living standards."

⚡ Public sector EV fleet "avoiding £3.7m of diesel a year"

Analysis by the Welsh Government Energy Service estimates the public sector's electric vehicle fleet is now avoiding the annual purchase of diesel worth up to £3.7m — 2.4 million litres.

• The fleet includes 2,045 electric vehicles, from cars and minibuses to refuse collection vehicles and buses, using 8.6 GWh of electricity a year. After charging costs, the net saving is put at £1.4m–£1.9m annually.
• Officials say the fleet has also cut exposure to volatile oil prices: during a 100-day oil price shock like the recent US-Iran market disruption, it would avoid around £200,000–£280,000 of extra diesel costs.

🎫 Pay-as-you-go rail "overcharging" warning

Flintshire council has warned that Transport for Wales' pay-as-you-go system could leave some passengers paying more, because the tap-in, tap-out machines can only charge full adult fares.

• TfW has been promoting the scheme on the 27-mile Wrexham-Bidston Borderlands Line, including a TikTok advert promising the "best value fare". But the council says there was no explanation that children, families, railcard holders and pensioners would be charged the full adult price.
• Cllr Alasdair Ibbotson (Penyffordd), who first raised the issue in July: "If you are eligible to travel on a child ticket or at a reduced rate because you have a railcard you will not be charged the correct fare for your journey. You will be overcharged. So the notion that this is the best value fare is categorically untrue."
• TfW said it was "actively reviewing" how it communicates alternative ticketing options.

🛤️ Heart of Wales line to close for five days

A section of one of Wales' most scenic railway lines shuts for five days from Monday 28 September while engineers renew track.

• The Craven Arms–Llandrindod Wells stretch closes 7am Monday 28 September to 7pm Friday 2 October. Work includes replacing track timbers between Bucknell and Llangynllo, renewing sleepers and timbers, surveys at Penybont Tunnel and repairs plus vegetation clearance at Llangynllo Tunnel.
• Transport for Wales will run replacement buses between Shrewsbury and Llandrindod Wells, with trains continuing between Llandrindod Wells and Swansea — five replacement services a day from Shrewsbury Monday to Thursday.

🚌 Cardiff bus delays warning as city centre roadworks bite

Bus passengers are being warned of significant delays next week when three-way traffic lights go up at Castle Street and Westgate Street in Cardiff from Monday 21 to Friday 25 September.

• Cardiff Bus says most of its services pass through the junction and delays there will ripple across the network. Operations director Gareth Stevens: "We'll do everything we can to keep our services running and minimise disruption, but we are expecting these temporary lights to have an impact on journey times across our network."
• The lights form part of a major scheme to make Castle Street's temporary road and cycling changes permanent — a 12-month programme by contractor Knights Brown including a fully segregated cycleway and upgraded junctions.

👮 Police officer cleared of misconduct over arrest punches

A North Wales Police officer filmed holding a man in a headlock and punching him nine times during an arrest has been cleared of misconduct.

• PC Richard Williams was accused over the arrest of Steven Clark in Porthmadog, Gwynedd, in May 2023, and faced eight allegations of gross misconduct. After a week-long hearing at Colwyn Bay police headquarters, the panel found he used reasonable force and accepted Clark had been potentially violent, resisted arrest and was "off his head" on drugs.
• Clark told the hearing he "couldn't breathe" during the incident; Williams had already been cleared of assault and intentional strangulation at a criminal trial in 2025.

⚖️ Man denies historical child sexual exploitation charges

Mohammed Ramzan, 76, of Newport, has pleaded not guilty to historical offences relating to the alleged sexual abuse and rape of children as part of a grooming gang in south Wales.

• He denies one count of causing prostitution, two counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault and one count of aiding and abetting rape at Cardiff Crown Court. The charges stem from Gwent Police's Operation Oak investigation into reports from women abused as children in the 1980s and 1990s.
• Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke set a trial date of January 2028; Ramzan was released on conditional bail. He is among nine men charged. (The 22 Aug roundup recorded that Ramzan and Sheikh Mohammed Tahir Ullah had not yet entered pleas — this is Ramzan's plea.)

• Swansea children's procession cancelled after far-right march announced. A 100-foot Future Generations Tapestry for Nature, made by schoolchildren and Bonymaen Community Centre and due to be carried through Swansea today before being presented to the Children's Commissioner for Wales, Rocio Cifuentes, was called off after 'United Front Swansea' planned a march past the city's mosque on the same day. The group is led by Mathew James Roper (real name Mathew James Thomas), convicted in 2021 of dangerous driving — including driving into a wall with his young daughter in the car — and a 100mph police chase; he has 13 previous convictions for 25 offences. Organisers Protect Our Green Spaces Wales had planned a peaceful family celebration of nature and green spaces. (Nation.Cymru — Emily Price, 18 Sep)
• Shoplifting at a decade high in north Wales. Theft offences in north Wales rose almost 5% year on year — the only Welsh police area to see a rise — with more than 5,000 offences in 2025-26. Gwent fell nearly 5%, Dyfed-Powys 13.2% and South Wales 13.6%. Aldi Pwllheli manager Kel Hughes said staff are "catching ordinary people" slipping everyday items into bags: "People are stealing to live, I think, rather than to sell on for profit." • 338 Rhoose homes approved — but ministers hold the final say. Vale of Glamorgan's planning committee voted in favour of Persimmon Homes' scheme north of the railway line in Rhoose, but a Welsh Government holding direction issued earlier this month stops the council granting permission while ministers decide whether to call it in. • Work starts on Llangefni's former chemical works. The eight-acre former Eastman (Peboc) site on Ynys Môn, unused since 2008, is being cleared and remediated for seven business units providing more than 5,200 sq m of employment space and potentially 140 full-time jobs. The council bought the site as part of the Freeport Gateway project and it sits inside the Anglesey Freeport Tax Site; Read Construction is carrying out the work. Council leader Cllr Gary Pritchard: "For many years, much of the old Peboc site remained unused. We now have an opportunity to transform it." (Nation.Cymru, 19 Sep)
• Soft plastics kerbside recycling trial for 21,000 Cardiff homes. From 13 October, households in parts of Whitchurch/Tongwynlais, Grangetown, Trowbridge and Rhiwbina will be able to recycle bags, wrappers and film in new red bags (delivered from 28 September). Soft plastics make up almost 6% of black-bin waste in Cardiff; the council reckons around 3,000 tonnes a year could be captured, and the city currently recycles 64% of household waste. • 20m phone mast approved in Penylan despite objections. Cardiff planners decided Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Ltd does not need prior approval for the mast off Llanedeyrn Road, over residents' objections and those of Lib Dem group leader Cllr Rodney Berman, who argued a site nearer the Llanedeyrn interchange would be less intrusive. • Torfaen closes in on its 4,700-home target — six years late. By April, 4,476 homes of the 15-year target (set in a plan meant to run to 2021) had been built — 95% — leaving 224 expected to complete by 2027, with work under way at South Sebastopol and the former County Hall site at Croesyceiliog. • Powys asylum row settled by Home Office figures. Just five asylum seekers receiving support were registered in Powys at the end of June — the third-lowest in Wales behind Monmouthshire (one) and Ceredigion (none). Ceredigion councillor Elizabeth Evans, who represents Aberaeron and Aberarth, says comments on a Facebook video of New Quay's lifeboat — 30,000 views — included "traitors" and "taxis for migrants" after anti-migrant protests in England: "I wasn't shutting down discussion because there was no discussion available to be had. 🏉 WRU "committed" to cutting a professional team despite backlash

Welsh Rugby Union director of rugby Dave Reddin says the governing body will press on with plans to cut from four professional men's sides to three by 2028, despite the row it has caused.

• Ospreys and Scarlets are set to fight to be the solitary west Wales team, with Cardiff and Dragons safe. In August, former Wales captain Jonathan Davies became the most high-profile figure calling on the WRU board to resign — including chief executive Abi Tierney, but not Reddin, who is not a board member.
• Reddin: "I understand the pain with it, but we've got to fix it and this is the way forward. We're really committed to it."

⚽ Wilson a major doubt for Wales' Nations League opener

Harry Wilson is a major doubt for the start of Wales' Nations League campaign after Leeds boss Daniel Farke confirmed a quadriceps injury.

• "Harry Wilson is out of this game, a quad injury… He will also probably miss the Welsh games, so definitely not good news for him and also not for the Welsh team."
• The 29-year-old — 69 caps and 17 goals — had been named in Craig Bellamy's squad to face Portugal, Denmark and Norway. Wales return to League A, starting in Lisbon on 24 September.

Glamorgan's bowlers overcame Surrey resistance to claim a 184-run victory at The Oval and rubber-stamp their place in County Championship Division One next season.

• Glamorgan 132 & 594 beat Surrey 115 & 427; Timm van der Gugten, Ray Toole, Zain ul Hassan and Mason Crane took two wickets each. Ryan Patel's 132 had given Surrey hope of saving the game or chasing 612. The win ends a four-match winless run.

🚴 Brennan: "disgraceful nothing has changed" since Tarling's death

Britain's Matthew Brennan says it is "disgraceful that nothing has changed" to make cycling safer following the death of Fin Tarling last month.

• Tarling, 19, died on 14 August during the Volta a Portugal after a high-speed collision with a van that had strayed onto the closed road. His funeral took place in Aberystwyth on Thursday.
• Brennan, 21, of Visma-Lease a Bike: "We were watching his funeral yesterday and I said to my friend: 'It's so sad we've lost someone so special and also nothing has changed.' I really think that is disgraceful."
