🔴 Top Story: Doctors warn Wales risks "one of the unhealthiest generations of children in decades"

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) in Wales says the health of children in Wales is "shocking" and that outcomes for young people are worsening or slowing in many areas — warning that without urgent action Wales risks "raising one of the unhealthiest generations of children in decades". The warning, from an analysis of 12 key indicators including infant mortality, mental health, obesity, vaccine rates and asthma, says the effect is felt most sharply in deprived areas. 27.3% of children aged four to five were overweight or living with obesity in 2024-25 — the highest prevalence ever recorded in Wales and the highest rate among all four UK nations. More than a quarter (27%) of children aged five to six had obvious tooth decay in 2024-25, with children in the most deprived areas nearly twice as likely to be affected as those in the least. Vaccination coverage has fallen below recommended levels, with very few routine childhood vaccines now meeting the 95% uptake target; an estimated 135,000 children and young people in Wales are living with a diagnosable mental health condition, including one in four 17 to 24-year-olds. Asthma-related hospital admissions among children aged five to 14 rose sharply in September 2024 — 110 admissions against 23 in August, a 378% increase. RCPCH co-officer for Wales Dr Dana Beasley said the report exposed the "shocking state" of child health and "the deepening inequalities experienced by families across Wales": "Behind every statistic is a child whose health, wellbeing and opportunities in life can be affected for years to come." Fellow co-officer Dr Lizzy Nickerson called on the Plaid Cymru government to honour its manifesto commitment to a Children's Health Plan, focused on data, targets and investment. A YouGov poll commissioned for the report found only 27% of respondents felt the Welsh government was doing enough on child health, 18% thought NHS spending on it was "about right", and 68% believed the cost-of-living crisis was harming child health. The Welsh government said it would consider the findings "carefully" and is "considering options to provide a stronger and more sustained national focus on babies, children and young people's health".

BBC Wales warns of "managed decline" without licence fee reform. Giving evidence to the Commons Welsh Affairs Select Committee, BBC Cymru Wales head of corporate affairs Rhys Evans said the broadcaster is looking at £9m of savings with 50 posts cut, with further savings likely in 2028 and 2029: "Unless there is future licence fee reform then we are all set on that inevitable path of continued and managed decline." He said he believed BBC Cymru Wales "is here to stay" but was "not so confident about the type of content that we presently produce and distribute so effectively, because we just don't have the money for it". Geraint Evans, chief executive of S4C, said the future of Welsh-language broadcasting was in "jeopardy" as the channel served social media and YouTube as well as television: "S4C will need at the very least the same funding that we have now, with inflationary increases, for a significant period to come." The TV licence fee, which funds BBC Cymru Wales and most of S4C, is under review.

Reform MS won't say if he signed off error-riddled PISA press release. A Senedd staffer working for Sir Gaerfyrddin MS Gareth Beer issued a press release to media outlets on Tuesday (8 Sep) that contained spelling and grammatical errors alongside inaccurate and misleading claims about Wales' PISA results — including that Wales had hit "rock bottom" and that "the results are worse than last years". PISA is not conducted annually (the previous assessment was 2022, published 2023), and against 2022 maths showed a statistically significant fall while reading and science did not differ significantly — in science Wales was in fact three points higher. Beer has refused to say whether he approved the release.

Couple told their five remaining embryos will be destroyed after £23,000 of fertility treatment. Nat and Nik Fraser-Edwards, of Penyffordd near Wrexham, celebrated son Jude's first birthday last month after six failed rounds of artificial insemination and success through ICSI, which left them with six embryos. In a telephone consultation in June they were told their sperm donor had withdrawn consent, and that the remaining five embryos would be destroyed after a cooling-off period of a year — the hardest part, Nat said, being told "we then allow them to perish". "We were absolutely floored." Under UK law a sperm or egg donor can withdraw consent up until the embryo is transferred into the womb; the couple want the law changed so consent cannot be withdrawn once an embryo has been created, arguing they were "blindsided" by the rule. Sam Beesley (41), of Shrewsbury, and Carly Estlick were told last month their 10 remaining embryos will be destroyed in August 2027 — while expecting their first child, Finn, in October. "Carly is already grieving… Whereas until that day in 2027, I will not stop fighting," said Sam. HFEA director of compliance Rachel Cutting said the law cannot be changed by the regulator and clinics must warn patients clearly; the Department of Health and Social Care said it "keep[s] all aspects of the regulatory regime under review".

Rare special report issued over Swansea Bay health board's waiting-list failings. The Public Services Ombudsman for Wales took the unusual step after Swansea Bay University Health Board failed to implement two of four recommendations from an investigation into a patient's six-year wait for knee replacement surgery. The case involved a man known as Mr W, waiting for a total knee replacement since August 2019, whose waiting-time clock was inappropriately reset in October 2023 without being communicated to him. The Ombudsman found no documented clinical decision that he was medically unfit, and a later scan confirmed he was fit to proceed — but by the end of the investigation his condition had deteriorated so far that the operation was no longer possible. The two outstanding recommendations, due by February 2026, require an independent re-audit of the orthopaedic waiting list and training for staff applying Welsh Government referral-to-treatment guidance. Concerns over the board's orthopaedic waiting lists date back several years.

Air quality fears over Cardiff data centre plans. The application by Curtis Hall Ltd for a data centre on the Cardiff East Park and Ride site in Llanrumney, submitted in January 2026, contains its own air quality assessment warning that running emergency backup generators for more than 30 minutes "would result in the exceedance of the short-term NO2 air quality objective for the protection of human health" — and recommending neighbouring residents "stay inside and keep windows closed". Revised April 2026 guidance said generators would be tested individually each week and emissions were "considered acceptable"; two Senedd members, Nick Carter and Zaynub Akbar, say that is not good enough: "People in Llanrumney should never be told that breaching air quality standards next to their children's school is acceptable… even under the developer's own revised modelling, which still predicts up to three breaches of safe nitrogen dioxide levels a year." Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire councils are to pool resources for a regional planning enforcement task force, revealed by Wrexham's lead member for strategic planning Cllr Hugh Jones after incidents at Coedpoeth and Minera. Former coal mine could become a waste sorting depot. Plans submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council would convert an existing industrial building at the former Cae Glas Colliery, west of Fochriw, into a facility handling "non-hazardous household, commercial and industrial" waste — six days a week, with five full-time jobs if approved (reference 26/0546/COU). Coal was worked at the site intermittently for much of the 20th century: drifts were driven in 1920 before being abandoned in 1924, and the Shankland family reopened it as a small private colliery in 1955. Three years later owner Idris Shankland and Wilfred and Charlie Hollister died underground on 24 September 1958 when they were overcome by methane and black damp while checking water levels. Mining finally ended when the colliery closed on 6 December 1997.

2,000 new homes proposed in Monmouthshire to support 6,000 jobs. Monmouthshire County Council has set out the approach behind its replacement local development plan, which it says will help support 6,000 new jobs, as two independent inspectors began a series of hearings. Deputy leader Cllr Paul Griffiths said the 2021 preferred strategy, drawn up under Conservative control, had "an over reliance on development of market housing, demand for which would not come from within the county" — likely sought by retirees, skewing the county's ageing demographic. Thomas Webster, 29, of Lapworth, Warwickshire, was sentenced to two years at Warwick Crown Court after admitting 10 counts of stirring up racial hatred online, plus religious hatred and hatred on grounds of sexual orientation, following BBC Wales Investigates' undercover programme Unmasked: Extreme Far Right. Webster, a former HMRC tax worker and member of the far-right group Patriotic Alternative, told an undercover reporter he was a "white totalitarianist" who wanted Jewish and gay people tortured and executed and Muslims "globally extinct"; he was filmed saying that at HMRC he liked to "deliberately" give non-white people "bad information". He was dismissed by HMRC in February 2025, a month after the programme aired.
