Cardiff Bay sources say Thomas — a former North London Conservative council leader personally appointed by Nigel Farage despite not having lived in Wales for two decades — is "sniffing around" for a safe seat should Andy Burnham call a snap general election.

2. Reform's Chaotic Senedd Debut — Tears, Walkouts & Own-Goals

The Guardian's Wales correspondent describes Reform UK's first weeks as Senedd opposition as a "dramatic first impression" marked by:

Joe Martin (Caerdydd Penarth MS) — caused gasps during FMQs by differentiating between Ukrainian and Sudanese refugees, alleging only the latter commit violent crimes, and asking what the FM would do to avoid "the next inevitable attack". Labour MS Shav Taj struggled to hold back tears responding.
Next day — Martin alleged Welsh students can't read and Indian nurses are taking Welsh jobs, triggering a walkout by Plaid, Labour and Green MSs.
Chief Whip Llŷr Powell told the BBC: "I didn't hear anything I thought went over the line… Get used to it. It's the 'new norm'."
Own-goal vote — one-third of Reform MSs voted against their own party on a Plaid Cymru childcare motion that included an amendment noting "Reform UK had no commitments on childcare in its Welsh manifesto".

4. Laura Anne Jones — Racial Slur Suspension

Status: Facing 14-day suspension from the Senedd

Jones, Reform's only MS (defected from Tories Jul 2025), was investigated by the Senedd Standards Commissioner for using a racial slur about Chinese people in a WhatsApp conversation while still a Conservative in 2023.

Joe Martin — "Vile" Remarks & Committee Appointment

Reform MS Joe Martin was criticised for making "vile" remarks about asylum seekers during FMQs. He was then appointed to the Equality, Human Rights and Social Justice Committee — the very committee that scrutinises the Nation of Sanctuary policy he wants scrapped. Critics called the appointment a "mockery".
