🔴 Top Story: £121m for a new NHS hip-and-knee surgery hub at Llantrisant

The Welsh Government is investing a further £121m in a Regional Orthopaedic Arthroplasty Hub at Llantrisant Health Park — six new operating theatres, 54 beds and around 3,000 hip and knee replacements a year, aimed squarely at cutting NHS Wales waiting times.

The funding, announced by the Health and Care Cabinet Minister Mabon ap Gwynfor in a Welsh Government release dated 00:01 this morning, covers the next phase of the health park being built on the site of the former British Airways avionics engineering building at Gwaun Elai, near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

The hub is meant to help hit a target of no patient waiting longer than 36 weeks for treatment by 2030, and officials hope more patients will be able to go home the same day as their operation.

Mabon ap Gwynfor: "This funding is a significant boost to the construction of a new purpose-built facility at Llantrisant Health Park – designed to cut waiting times and get people the treatment they need faster… This is what real investment in the NHS looks like – not a quick fix, but the capacity we need to clear the backlog and keep waiting times down for the future."
Construction is expected to begin later this month and finish by late 2028, with the hub opening to patients in early 2029. The first phase — a Community Diagnostic Hub — began in March 2026.
Three health boards are working together on the project: Cwm Taf Morgannwg, Aneurin Bevan and Cardiff and Vale.
The development has previously faced scrutiny over the private sector's role, after concerns that phase-one diagnostic services would be run by an independent provider.

🦿 Nine-month waits to be tackled by the new hub

The orthopaedic hub is the second phase of Llantrisant Health Park and will initially concentrate on hip and knee arthroplasty before widening its scope. Wales has seen NHS waiting lists rise for four consecutive months (BBC Wales, 17 Sep).

📝 Illegal dumping petition races past 900 signatures in two days

A Senedd petition launched by Wrexham MP Andrew Ranger calling for stronger council powers to stop illegal waste dumping has passed its first milestone within two days — nearly 900 signatures against the 250 needed to qualify for a hearing by the Senedd's Petitions Committee.

It is a direct response to incidents in Coedpoeth and Minera, where wagonloads of waste have been tipped on former mine workings near a protected landscape.

Natural Resources Wales issued a Section 59 notice to halt dumping on land off Castle Road and Talwrn Road in Coedpoeth and remove the waste — it was ignored, and weeks later no enforcement action had followed. Dumping then began at Nant Lais and Old Smelt Road on the Minera border, where Travellers took over the site. A Wrexham Council interim High Court injunction simply moved tipping activity back to Talwrn.
The petition says notices "can be appealed, temporary powers lapse after 28 days and injunctions take time and public money that local authorities cannot always commit", and points out that waste and planning are devolved so Wales can match England's new enforcement measures (drones, more Environment Agency officers, higher fines).
Andrew Ranger: "I am hearing daily from concerned residents in Coedpoeth and Minera about illegal dumping and changes being made to the landscape… In England, the Prime Minister has made changes to planning enforcement. This is something we need to see action on here in Wales."
A second petition, proposed by Cllrs Anthony Wedlake and Kate Coventry and due to launch at a protest outside NRW's Buckley offices, was rejected by the Senedd for being too similar. If Ranger's reaches 10,000 signatures it forces a full Senedd debate.

🗳️ BBC reconstructs Reform's "challenging" week

BBC Wales published a weekend reconstruction of the seven days that saw Reform Wales leader Dan Thomas arrested, an MS defect to Plaid Cymru and a new leader-in-waiting emerge.

Chief whip Llŷr Powell: "It's been challenging but we've come through it." The piece details how MSs were told only of "personal reasons" for Thomas's absence from First Minister's Questions, how a Reform barrister's legal letter failed to block reporting of the arrest, and how Thomas then sent a WhatsApp message to his own MSs explaining the situation.
Thomas was arrested on suspicion of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour; he says he was "released without charge" and has "done nothing wrong", and remains MS for Casnewydd Islwyn. Helen Jenner is expected to replace him as leader.

🔫 Four jailed over loaded gun and £1.5m of class A drugs at Cardiff flat

Four men from Cardiff have been jailed after police investigating a suspected drug deal found a loaded firearm and large quantities of cocaine and heroin at a city flat.

Sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court after a South Wales Police Cardiff and Vale Serious Organised Crime investigation that began on 25 February:

Connor Preece, 26, of Tremorfa — 11 years — pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited firearm, possessing ammunition while prohibited, and possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply. Police found a loaded firearm containing 11 live cartridges, one kilogram of cocaine and half a kilogram of heroin.
Kai Phillips, 22, of Roath — 5 years 1 month; George Payne, 27, of Riverside — 4 years 3 months; Shay Eedy, 24, of Atlantic Wharf — 4 years 1 month. Phillips and Eedy admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine; Payne admitted supplying crack cocaine and possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply.
Det Insp Alexander Bartley: "Our Serious Organised Crime team is committed to disrupting and dismantling drug gangs and the hard work of investigators meant the group had no choice but to plead guilty."

🧊 Fridge collections suspended as tens of thousands pile up at Newport Docks

Almost a quarter of Welsh councils have suspended household collections of fridges and freezers because of a national shortage of processing capacity — leaving tens of thousands of appliances stacked at Newport Docks.

The closure of the Newport site is thought to have removed about 30% of the UK's fridge recycling capacity, after recycling company Unimetals — which had dozens of UK sites — filed for liquidation in 2025.
The Local Government Association says dozens of councils across Wales and England have been forced to stop or restrict collections, with more expected to follow. Oxfordshire County Council has urged the UK government to reopen the Newport plant.
Lee Young of Cardiff has been trying to get rid of a broken fridge-freezer for two months: "I tried to take it to the recycling centre in July but was told it wasn't accepted. Someone said the council would collect it, but they won't either." It has sat in his back garden since, repurposed as overnight plant storage. He is also confused that neighbouring Vale of Glamorgan will still collect from the kerb.
Michael Enea, a Newport campaigner who blogs about fly-tipping: "I think there'll be a lot of people in local communities where they don't have the ability to dispose of their fridges and freezers, who will end up literally dumping them in the street."
Associated British Ports, which took over the Newport site, said it was "in discussions with third parties" and that material "is being managed responsibly". Dr David Santillo of Greenpeace warned some appliances could still contain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases. Defra said it was working to manage the shortages.

🛴 Gwynedd to demand action on e-scooters

Cyngor Gwynedd is to ask the Welsh and UK governments what action and regulations they can introduce to tackle the risks posed by children and young people riding e-scooters on pavements and public roads.

Cllr Paul Rowlinson (Rachub) will bring a Notice of Motion to full council in Caernarfon on Thursday 24 September, arguing e-scooters fall within the legal definition of a motor vehicle and so cannot lawfully be used except on private land with the landowner's consent — meaning police can confiscate them and issue a traffic offence report for driving without third-party insurance, carrying a £300 fine and six points.
The motion says many parents and young people "do not realise that the use of e-scooters on public roads is illegal". Government-approved rental scooters are capped at about 12.5 mph, and none of the UK trials are in Gwynedd; privately owned models typically reach 15–25 mph, with high-performance versions up to 30–60 mph.

🏛️ "Heartbreaking" state of Lampeter's historic campus

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has been criticised over the condition of some of its buildings at the Lampeter campus — with the town's mayor describing the state of a Grade II listed cricket pavilion as "heartbreaking".

Gabrielle Davies, shop owner and town mayor: "Several buildings, especially on the far side of the river, are starting to show their teeth… It's heartbreaking to be honest. It's Grade II listed, there's fencing around it, there's graffiti, it's been boarded up, and it's just rotting." She said children play there because "maybe they know nobody's around".
With undergraduate teaching having ended at Lampeter last year, there are concerns the "empty campus" is drawing more attention to the buildings' condition.
A university spokesperson said UWTSD was "actively exploring funding opportunities to support refurbishment and redevelopment of key parts of the estate". The institution has been in the town since 1822, making it the oldest academic institution in Wales.

🎓 Cardiff named Welsh University of the Year — but falls out of the UK top 30

Cardiff University tops The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027 for Wales, but drops four places nationally to 32nd — meaning no Welsh institution now stands in the UK-wide top 30.

Aberystwyth recorded the biggest fall in Wales — down 21 places to 63rd, exiting the top 50. Swansea was 38th (down one), Bangor 53rd (up six), University of South Wales 75th (up seven), Cardiff Metropolitan 78th (down seven), Trinity Saint David 97th (up two) and Wrexham 114th (up eight).
The guide's UK top five: St Andrews first, then LSE, Imperial, Cambridge and Oxford.
Cardiff's slide comes amid controversy over its cuts programme and its spending of more than £1m in the past year alone on the Nous Group consultancy — dubbed "Nousferatu" by critics in higher education. An academic source said: "It's appalling that so much is being spent on expensive consultants when staff are losing their jobs."

🐄 First Welsh vet students graduate as Aberystwyth eyes a full degree

The first 23 students ever to train as vets in Wales have graduated — and their lecturer hopes Aberystwyth will eventually offer the full five-year degree on site.

Wales's first veterinary school opened at Aberystwyth in September 2021. Students spend the first two years at the university's School of Veterinary Science, with the final three at the Royal Veterinary College's Hawkshead campus in Hertfordshire under a joint degree.
Dr Sharon King: "That's the aspiration, certainly. It makes sense for us to have a completely full school there and for the five years to be part of their studies in Aberystwyth. It all depends on the agricultural industry, the veterinary industry and funding, unfortunately."
She said the 23 graduates had a ceremony at the RVC in London but also a separate celebration in Aberystwyth. Dr King won the British Veterinary Association's Veterinary Mentor of the Year 2026 award. She was speaking on BBC Radio Cymru's Beti a'i Phobol, broadcast Sunday 20 September at 18:00.

🏴 New Bishop of Bangor installed — and says the cathedral "has been transformed"

Manon Ceridwen James has been installed as Bishop of Bangor, in a service at Bangor Cathedral on Saturday afternoon.

Raised in Nefyn, Pen Llŷn, she was ordained deacon at Bangor Cathedral in 1994 and was among the first women ordained priest in the diocese in 1997. She was consecrated bishop at a service in Newport the previous weekend.
The post had been vacant since August 2025 after the retirement of former bishop Andy John, following a troubled period for the diocese. Concerns raised last year included complaints about a "culture where sexual boundaries appeared blurred", excessive drinking, and weaknesses in governance and safeguarding.
Bishop Manon James: "The cathedral has been transformed, and we've been working on 30 recommendations — they're nearly all in place. We have a review next week… Restoring faith takes time, it won't happen overnight." She added that the most important thing is that people "can have their say and be heard".

✍️ Twm Morys on his "legendary" parents — and a new S4C documentary on Jan Morris

The Welsh poet Twm Morys presents a new two-part S4C documentary about his mother, the travel writer and historian Jan Morris.

His father, James Morris, was The Times correspondent embedded with the 1953 Everest expedition — the only reporter invited — and was the man who told the world that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay had reached the summit. He also reported the 1956 Suez Crisis, revealing that France and Israel had colluded to attack Egypt; his work contributed to Anthony Eden's resignation as prime minister months later.
Jan Morris had Welsh family roots — a grandfather from Monmouthshire and relatives in Abergavenny — and wrote about Wales in the 1950s "a little contemptuously" about Welsh nationalism, Twm says; J E Jones of Plaid Cymru wrote to urge her to write about Wales from inside the fold rather than from outside — and from then on she wrote more and more as someone who belonged. Twm believes that is what she wanted to happen, recalling her essays about seeing her father's mountains from the other side of the Severn in Clevedon.
Twm Morys: "You have to remember this is one son's view — I have a sister and brothers and they think very differently to me about Jan as a person. She's enormously complicated, and every family's history is very complicated."

🎭 Equity: a 30% rates cut won't fix an "insecure" cultural workforce

The performing arts union Equity has welcomed the Welsh Government's new culture funding but warned that support for buildings must be matched by support for the people who work in them.

The measures include a permanent 30% cut in business rates for hospitality and leisure venues — theatres, cinemas, clubs and music venues with a rateable value under £51,000, taking effect 1 April 2027 subject to Senedd approval — and £10m of arts capital investment this year, with 58 organisations funded in the first phase and a further £2m round opened.
Simon Curtis, Equity's National Official for Wales: "Wales cannot build a cultural powerhouse on an insecure workforce. These announcements must be matched by a long-term commitment to the people who create our cultural life. A refurbished theatre or venue needs the resources to commission and stage work, pay people properly and sustain creative careers."
Culture Minister Heledd Fychan told the Senedd: "You need a strategy, you need investment, you need collaboration", and said she was concerned "to see jobs being lost because of AI" — a worry Equity says must shape funding, commissioning, informed consent and fair payment. The union has secured AI protections for Welsh-language television performers through the TAC/Equity agreement.

🏴 "Wales is in England" — officially

A Nation.Cymru feature points out the awkward truth that Wales is also a village and civil parish in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, with a population of just over 7,000.

The name of the Yorkshire village shares its etymology with the nation — the Germanic "Walhaz", a term for "foreigners" or Romanised inhabitants of the former empire, suggesting a surviving Romano-British population in the area. The alternative derivation, "Waelas", means "field of battle".
One resident recalled a coachload of Belgium fans for the Euros following their sat-nav to the wrong Wales: "We think you've got the wrong Wales."

A former Monsanto secretary says her happy memories of working there have been replaced by fears after the BBC's Buried documentary. Susan Smith worked as a secretary at the Ruabon works aged 19; her Acrefair home, where she has lived 53 years, is separated from the decommissioned chemical plant by a thin tree line. She developed breast cancer at 38 and her husband Geraint has had prostate cancer and, more recently, skin cancer. Dust and powders blew through the open glass hatch of the telex office where she worked: "No-one ever gave us a safety briefing, protective clothing or anything… I loved my job at Monsanto – now I worry about it may have harmed my family's health." Dolaucothi Gold Mines near Pumsaint — the only known Roman gold mine in the UK — is free to enter this weekend, from 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, including the self-led Roman Mine Trail (collect a hard hat and fob; guided Victorian tours are still ticketed). The Romans began mining there around AD 70–80, and some of their pick marks can still be seen underground; the final period of mining ended in 1938. Matthew Rhys's sister says the family has been "pinching ourselves all week" after his historic Emmy double. A 17-year-old from Felinheli is among the youngest Welsh people ever to swim the English Channel. Owen "Owi" Williams completed the crossing from England to France on Monday 14 September in 10 hours 45 minutes, raising money for Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, which has cared for him as he lives with haemophilia. He set off at 01:30 after just 24 hours' notice and hit "rough" water in the first half. Fewer than 3,100 people have ever completed the swim and about half of attempts fail. 🏉 Bellamy reveals ruptured appendix left him in intensive care

Wales manager Craig Bellamy has revealed how a ruptured appendix put him in intensive care for about a week during a family holiday in Spain in August 2025.

"I was in agony all day… I had a coffee but then I was sweating and I just keeled over. My missus said: 'You need to go to the doctors now'. My appendix had ruptured and I was in intensive care for a good week. It used to kill you before surgery came in."
Weeks later he made a 6,000-mile round trip for Wales' World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan, which Wales won 1-0: "If you look back at the Kazakhstan game, you could see how white I was. I was really struggling." He told the players because he wanted to know whether anyone else had been through it: "My first words to them were: 'How painful is this?' I've never known anything like it. It was a bad summer."
Wales begin an extended four-match international break against Portugal in Lisbon on Thursday, then Denmark in Copenhagen three days later, before home games with Norway and Denmark.
