Inflation jumps to 3.1% as fuel costs bite — highest in six months

Rises in petrol, diesel and airfares pushed UK inflation up to 3.1% in the year to August, from 2.9% in July (ONS). It is the highest reading in six months and moves the figure further away from the Bank of England's 2% target.

• Motor fuel prices rose 23% compared with August last year. Petrol climbed 9.1p between July and August to 161.3p a litre — the highest price recorded since November 2022, when Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine was pushing up global energy costs.
• Oil hit more than $91 a barrel as the US-Israel war with Iran continued, against roughly $73 just before hostilities began earlier this year. The Middle East conflict continues to disrupt global oil supplies.
• Airfares jumped during the key summer holiday month.
• The Bank of England meets on Thursday to decide whether to change the base rate, currently 3.75%.
• Chancellor John Healey (preparing his first Budget next month): "The war in the Middle East is impacting on inflation worldwide, not just here at home. In our bills, our weekly shop and at the petrol pumps." He added: "Despite this serious global uncertainty, our UK economy is proving resilient."
• Growth picture: the economy expanded 0.4% in July, boosted by AI investment, but Q2 growth slowed to 0.4% from 0.6% in Q1.

Letby fallout: 'cot cams' for baby wards and a doctor's "grim reading"

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper told the Commons she has tasked officials to "urgently develop plans" for live-streaming "cot cams" in England's neonatal units, after the Thirlwall Inquiry into Lucy Letby's murders and attempted murders.

• Lady Justice Thirlwall made 17 recommendations, including CCTV for all cots and incubators in all neonatal units and restricting access to insulin.
• Her report found a "complete failure to protect babies" and a "profound failure of management, governance and safeguarding" at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She said some of the babies Letby killed could have been saved if managers had acted earlier.
• Dr John Gibbs, the retired consultant paediatrician who tried to raise concerns, told the BBC the report was "grim reading". He accepted consultants must bear "collective" responsibility for some failings, and said he wished they had been "brave enough to follow our suspicions and escalate things to the police earlier".
• Paul Rees, chief executive of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, said he was "truly sorry for the NMC's failings" and that "we also did not act quickly enough to suspend Lucy Letby".
• Parents were "kept in the dark for years" about concerns their babies might have been deliberately harmed — Thirlwall called this "reprehensible".
• Timeline: Letby was moved to administrative duties in July 2016 after consultants complained; hospital bosses did not invite Cheshire Police in until May 2017, and Letby remained on site for more than a year after that. The inquiry identified missed opportunities including a cluster of three baby deaths in June 2015.
• Lib Dem MP Sarah Green: "NHS culture must change."
• Separately, a BBC Look North investigation heard a senior consultant say they should have followed their suspicions sooner.

Reform UK's Welsh operation in chaos: leader quits after arrest — and an MS defects

Dan Thomas quit as Reform UK's Welsh leader after being arrested on Sunday (13 September) on suspicion of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour. On the same day, Reform MS Sarah Cooper-Lesadd defected to Plaid Cymru.

• Gwent Police: a 45-year-old man from the Aberbargoed area was arrested and bailed pending further enquiries. Thomas, the MS for Casnewydd Islwyn, says he was "released without charge" and has "done nothing wrong"; he is standing down "due to personal reasons" but will continue to serve his constituents.
• Thomas was appointed Welsh leader by Nigel Farage in February. Reform went from two politicians in Cardiff Bay to 34 in May's Senedd election, making it the largest opposition group in Welsh history. A new leader is expected to be chosen by the end of the month.
• Reform MS Llyr Powell said the group would run a "formal process"; he described Thomas as "panicking" at the thought of "this being relived in everyone's living rooms", but added: "We need to all remember there are human beings at the end of this."
• Sarah Cooper-Lesadd (elected for Reform in Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg in May, a former Conservative parliamentary candidate) said Reform has "no interest in Wales" and is "not serious about governing Wales". Her defection was approved by Plaid's Senedd group and national executive.
• Marc Jones, chair of Plaid Cymru's Senedd group: "Reform UK is descending into chaos… Reform is interested in division and headlines, not governing Wales."
• Ken Skates, Welsh Labour leader: "This is quite incredible news… Dan Thomas was a personal pick by Nigel Farage and this will surely demonstrate the appalling judgement of the Reform UK leader."
• Mims Davies, Conservative Shadow Secretary of State for Wales: Reform are "hitting the news for all the wrong reasons — massive crypto donations, on top of the jailing of Nathan Gill for pro-Russian bribery."

UK in talks to join Canada-led global defence bank

The government is in discussions about joining the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), a Canada-led multilateral investment bank aimed at raising more money for defence spending.

• Chancellor John Healey is considering a bid — not long after his predecessor Rachel Reeves rejected the idea. Treasury officials stress no decision has been made.
• Supporters say the bank would let governments borrow more cheaply for military projects. It already has backing from Albania, Bulgaria, Belgium, Greece, Latvia, Luxembourg, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.
• Membership for the UK and other G7 countries would come with an upfront investment cost of around £870m spread over three years.
• As defence secretary, Healey privately pushed for the UK to join the DSRB as a way of raising money. He resigned in June, accusing the Treasury of being unwilling to provide the resources needed to defend the country.
• The government has so far avoided committing to 3% of national income on defence by 2030, repeating only the longer-term goal of 3.5% by 2035. Paying for growing defence commitments is one of Healey's biggest headaches ahead of the October Budget.

Piddington votes to leave the UK over asylum housing plan

Residents of Piddington, Oxfordshire, voted to become independent from the UK in a symbolic referendum held in protest at Home Office plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at nearby MoD Bicester.

• Out of 312 votes cast, 285 voted to leave, 26 voted no, and one ballot paper was spoiled. The village has around 350 residents; the ballot box sat outside the village hall.
• Piddington is the latest of several villages to vote symbolically to leave the UK over the asylum housing scheme.
• Delivering the result, parish council vice chair Susannah Parden said: "We are Piddington the village that roars." Council chair Tim McNally: "This is an example of democracy in operation… We have given a message to the world." Resident Herbert Owen called it "the Battle of Britain".
• Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told BBC Breakfast: "I think they have [roared] — we have heard it, we are listening… I do really understand that when changes are made that affect your community it can be very distressing."

'One in, one out' costs £56,000 per person returned to France

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told MPs the government's "one in, one out" scheme to send migrants who cross the Channel back to France costs on average £56,000 per person.

• That is higher than the Home Office's own estimated average cost for enforced migrant returns of £48,800.
• The deal allows the UK to return some small boat arrivals while agreeing to take in the same number of people from France believed to have a legitimate claim to come to Britain.
• Around 1,400 people have been deported under the scheme since it began in August 2025. The agreement had been due to end in June 2026 but has been extended into October.
• Mahmood said the policy had been "difficult" to scale up and numbers remained "relatively small", but the concept was viable. She said the UN and other agencies had reported some migrants were not getting on small boats because of the chance of being accepted.
• 17,425 people have arrived in the UK by small boat this year — a 44% decrease on the same period last year. The National Crime Agency says law enforcement was a "key factor", and that Middle East war disruption hit small-boat supply chains.

• Noah Donohoe inquest: Stormont department "erred" — after five days deliberating, the jury found the Department for Infrastructure failed to identify a hazard at the water culvert where the 14-year-old died in north Belfast in June 2020, and that there was no warning sign. It found those failings may have contributed to the death. The jury found no PSNI failings contributed — it agreed Noah died before he was reported missing.
